Try the Humane Society or your local animal shelter. You can find any kind of dog there including some pure-breds. If you're going to be home to train it, you might want a puppy, if no one's home during the day, you might want an older dog which is already housebroken. The size would depend on your lifestyle & accomodations. Some places have a weight limit on dogs. I'm sure they can find you a good companion.
