the cut is wide open - the skin around the cut doesn't touch and it looks like the entire outer layer of skin is gone...

Go to the emergency room anyway! If you need stitches they will give them to you and if you don't they will clean out the cut and then send you on your way.

I did the same thing about 8 months ago and rushed myself to the ER because blood was going everywhere. It hurt so bad! I didn't know whether or not the skin was still there or not, all I could do was hold my hand tight with a hand towel around it. Well if I would have known what they were going to do, I wouldn't have gone. All they did was GLUE my fingertip back ON. OUCH! Then gave me a pain pill. Once I got home, within a few hours, the glue didn't stick and it busted back open. All I could do for it was keep it tightly bandaged for a good month. Till this day, I do not have feeling in that fingertip. So that's my advice. Don't go to the doctor. ER bill was $400, glue that didn't stick was $300, and the one pain pill was $200.

My cat sliced my finger in two down the middle like you'd slice a hotdog! If you don't think it's too bad (like mine was), then put Neosporin on it and bandage it up well. I had to keep it wrapped up so the skin could touch and heal, otherwise it stayed open. Ick. It took about a week, but I kept doing this, and it healed. Watch for signs of infection (pus, increasing pain, swelling, fever), which are signs of a medical emergency. Otherwise, it may heal up with little TLC. Use your best judgement.

Do you know any nurses? I'd have someone look at it...it may just need some steri strips to close the cut. Make sure you wash with soap and water...thats the first think to do....DO IT NOW.

It might just need a few sutures, but then again it could need a skin graft or something more. I would have it evaluated in your local Emergency Room.

Go to the doctor...he will tell you if you need sutures or not. You may not need stitches but might need it butterflied.
Also if you cut it with a knife or anything metal you might need a tetanus shot.

Go to the hospital ER.
If you wait too long it won't heal right.
