the question is

'wie hast du letzes wochenende zu haus geholfen?'

and i want to say

'not much/very little, i was very busy doing blah blah.....'

i can say everything apart from that! i was going to look it up in the dictionary, but i thought theres probably a phrase which germans use which would sound much better.

also, how do you say 'to be honest'?

I'd go for "nicht viel", my child, there's no special phrase that would make it sound better - "nicht viel, weil ich mit (blah blah) beschäftigt war."

"to be honest", well depends on the context, "um ehrlich zu sein" or "ehrlich gesagt" should do it for most occasions...

My German has become quite rusty, but given your context the phrase "gar nichts" comes to mind. It also doesn't sound right so stand by while I go to babel fish. They say it is perfect. Means nothing at all.
