We place them on the left ring finger because a vein runs straight to your heart from your left ring finger. The engagement ring is on the outside of your finger (you can slide it off first) and your band goes on the inside.

In the US and parts of Europe, the wedding ring is placed on the left hand, and the engagement ring is typically placed on top of it. In the old times, it was believed that there was a vein running from the ring finger on the left hand to the heart. In some countries, the wedding band is worn on the right hand (Russia, for example). I wear my wedding band on the left hand, and my engagement ring on the right, as they don't match.

Engagement ring and wedding go on the left ring finger. You put the ring one that finger because it's the only finger that has an artery that runs to your heart. You can bleed to death if you cut that finger.

The theory is that the left hand ring finger has a vein that runs directly to the heart.
Both your engagement ring and wedding band are worn on your left hand ring finger, wedding band first because it should be closest to your heart then engament ring on top.
