Driving around with a broken taillight makes you look bad anyways, I'd just get a new one. I wouldn't want to be flying down the road and have to slam on the breaks because I didn't see you.

It's not illegal to have a broken taillight so as long as it is showing red or your back up lights (white) are working. You received the ticket because the officer felt that your light wasn't being displayed in the proper color (hazard). You can call your local police non emergency. I wouldn't disclose to them that you received the ticket to ensure you get a valid answer. Just ask them if you would be breaking any driving laws by driving around with a broken taillight that's taped with red.

if red tape over a light is a suitable legal replacement for a light cover, all you need to do is re-tape it and make sure it is done right, and go show them...make sure to then follow whatever instructions are on the ticket. When I was 16 I got a fix it and had it signed off, and then thought I was done. I was supposed to mail it to the court house too, but didn't. I ended up with an ARREST warrant for failure to appear...it all got resolved but it was really scary getting taken to jail at 16 for doing nothing, and not even knowing why I had a warrant made it even worse!!!

Why waste your time with tape? Why not go to a junkyard and buy a used light and put it in? It isn't that difficult and instead of putting a bandaid on the problem, you fixed it.

I would think you got the ticket because your taillight was broken, not because you didnt have it taped properly.
