Forget BMI. No, you are not fat. BMIs only really work for non-athletes. If you've been doing karate for 4 years, you probably have quite an athletic physique (broad shoulders, some pectoral (chest) and back muscle mass and a small lean waist). You probably cary quite a bit of muscle weight on your legs too. All these factors contribute to your weight in pounds and an apparent but not actual idea that you are overweight. By that I mean that you carry a fair bit of lean weight which is always healthy (unless you're on anabolic steroids!!). Stay off the junk food (high fat and high sugar stuff) and you'll continue to be a lean mean karate machine.

Not at all. Don't use BMI's either.
I'm 5'10, waist size 12 but I'm 182 pounds. I was devestated at first and couldn't work it out becuase I have very little fat on me. Then someone pointed out that muscle weighs heavier than fat. I have a lot of muscle. and if you've done karate 4 years your bound to have developed muscle.

According to the BMI range, you are slightly overweight for your height.

However - you have to remember that its unlikely you LOOK overweight. In fact at size 10/14, I'd say you probably look absolutely fine. Also - if you exercise a lot, then your muscle mass is greater than most and reflects in your weight.

Health wise, losing a little bit (and I mean a little bit) of weight wouldn't do any harm, but you are in no way "fat".

Be happy within yourself.

Check out your BMI (Body Mass Index)

Very Obese Greater than 40

To check you BMI work out how much you weigh in stone and how tall you are. Visit

Hi based on the BMI you may be slightly overweight but note that it doesnt take into account the fact that you exercise as much as you do. Dont beat yourself up about the number, keep doing your exercise and lower your fat intake if the weight is bothering you. Good luck :)

It all reallly depends on your % of body fat. For women between 15%-23% is considered healthy. You can estimate % body fat by using calipers, getting a scale that reads % body fat, etc. just be aware that it is an estimate, the only way to get an exact % body fat is hydrostatic weighing and it is very expensive and time consuming.

Surely you can tell by looking in the mirror. Do you look fat? Do you feel fat? If you have to ask, then you probably aren't. I put on weight really easily and can always tell that I've put weight on by looking at myself. It ain't rocket science, hon.
