Well if your knees hurt, I would stay with the slow running/jogging.

It's been proven that sprinting for about 30 minutes doesn't exactly burn more calories than jogging...but that it continues to burn calories even after you stop. Jogging only burns calories for the duration of the cardio...high intensity interval training (sprinting mixed with jogging), burns calories after you workout too.

I think you see people doing HIIT...it's pretty impossible to constantly sprint for 10-30 min

When I go to the gym (which is usually 3 or 4 times a week) I will run on the treadmill for 20 minutes. I will mix it up and sprint for 5 or 10 minutes and then run at a moderate pass for another 10 minutes or so. I have heard from other people that it is good to mix up your running routine and sprint for a few minutes and then slow it down. It boosts your metabolism which then allows your body to burn more calories over time. I then lift weights for about 30 minutes because I not only want to drop a few pounds but most importantly I want to tone myself. Are you satisfied with your weight right now and running for an hour just to maintain?

If you're trying to lose fat, the best thing to do is actually to alternate between sprinting and jogging (like 5 minutes sprinting, then 10 jogging, and repeat that). The reason is that the way your body stores fat, it will burn more if it has sudden bursts of intensity in between less intense exercise.

Other than that, sprinting is better for strength type training, but running is better endurance and cardiovascular exercise.

You are trying to lose weight, right? If so, then it is better to run for an hour than to sprint for 30 minutes. The longer you do an activity, regardless of intensity, will burn more calories.

Wow! I can only do 45 minutes of running, though I haven't tried anything higher. Then I lift weights for an hour to a hour and a half with my coach. But he says sprinting is really good for you, but distance helps you lean out.

I would say run for the hour. It keeps your heart rate high for that much longer. Plus you are probably going over the recommended heart rate if you are sprinting for that long anyways.

Good Luck!

I would say run for an hour. You might not even be able to do that, but try.
