Okay, you have got to be the coolest brother EVER! That is an absolutely awesome idea! Depending upon where you are in the country, get advice from your local growers - I guess you could give a pic of the tree, or a gift certificate - but definitely make it a tree. I am so impressed.... I don't even have an alternate suggestion for you!

Instead of a fruit tree, a Japanese Red Maple is georgeous. My son is a landscape architect and I have seen him design landscaping for people, and that Japanese Red Maple really stands out and is so elegant and different. Look into it. It is not that cheap, but maybe you can get a smaller one at a nursury that won't be that expensive. But I assure you that will make an impression. Also a tree called Flowering Pear Tree. It is reddish purple in color and it grows beautifully and gives alot of shade. It does not bear fruit, but leaves are beautiful. . That is a little cheaper than the Japanese Maple Tree. Also go online and so a search of: "Ornamental Trees". See what comes up. You may be able to buy one online cheaper and have it delivered right to your sister's new home. Good Luck

A tree would be a great idea, but some people do not like to own fruit trees because they attract bees.
I would suggest evergreen trees instead-- like pines-- because then there are no leaves to rake. More people are accepting of them beacuse they are less work.
You can get really inexpensive trees at arborday.org-- I think 10 trees for $10!!!
Make sure to tell your sister how you decided on this type of gift.

I was talking to my best friend's mother last night (like a second mother to me growing up) and she asked me what my/our perfect gift would be. Here's the thing...to me, material things are just things. The gift of having her in my life, and there to support me on my wedding day, means more to me than anything she could buy me. She kept pressing, and all I could think was, "Well, this is why we registered. THAT'S what we want."
You seem close enough to your sister (ya' know, from these ten sentences) where you could just ask her. We asked my fiance's brother and wife what they wanted (before the wedding) and they said the previous owners were offering the washer and drier for a HUGE deal, but they didn't have the money after the down payment and everything else. We bought it for them.

I really think a fruit tree would be a cool gift. I would like a fruit tree myself. If you don't own a house and are renting then it would be a bad idea! HA!!!

Ask her what she has in mind for landscaping and that should help you decide what to purchase for her. Another thing you could do is get her a GC for a local nursery, so she could buy whatever strikes her fancy. Personally I loved the 2 lemon trees my sis bought me for my b-day as I was in the process of re-landscaping my yard. I also received 10 rosebushes for b-day and christmas presents.

I think it's a good idea, it symbolizes their growing love for one another. You know, maybe you should ask her (without giving the hint that you are buying one), what types of trees that she likes. Or have a friend ask her for you. If you know what type of tree that she likes, then you can get it. I might think a regular tree would be better; but try to get her opinion nonchalantly.

I think that's a wonderful and unique idea! I was thrilled when my husband bought me a lemon tree as a gift. Write a little poem to go along with it with your sentiments and about it will grow like your marriage or something.

If they could use it, it would be a great gift. And yes, it will (hopefully) last forever. Also, different trees have different meanings according to ancient beliefs so you may want to look into that and find one that has a meaning(long life, fertility, abundance, etc).

If your sister would like a fruit tree, it is a lovely and thoughtful gift. She and her husband can remember their wedding and you, the giver, as they watch it grow.
