It is most likely what has been added compared to what you are used to.

It is possible that there are some differences because of the type and the soil they grow in

You have got a suggestion that it could be different ingredients,I have one ,may be it is the potato that is different,could be too,since it grows in different soil ! Butter or cream could not be that different, I'm sure.Maybe it is just that the British have a way with mashed potatoes ,seriously they taste great.

There are different types of potatoes: those with cells that tend to separate and that break down easily when cooked, and those with cells that are more firmly held together and stay relatively firm when cooked. In other words "floury" and "waxy".Within these two types there are so many different kinds of potatoes, I can´t mention them all. Depending on the type they also taste different.

Maybe they add different ingredients to their mash in Great Britain.

Ok seriously, if you're using milk or butter to mash the potatoes after their boiled, it may be that the pasteurization process differs in the UK. Just a guess of course....

I think the soil here is very good, so it makes them taste better.when i mash potatoes i add a bit of butter and milk to them.

It's probably different potatos used,or the people making them add different ingredients then the people in the US.
There are alot of different ways to make them.

The milk / cream tastes different. Also, depends if they use butter or margarine
