IT does not matter. For used or old the rate now is around $60 an hour in the USA. In other words, to change a shock absorber on a new or old car , the labor would be about the same. They have a book which tells them how long a repair should take and how much to charge. So if you went to the car dealers they would have the exact price. The trick is to find a small shop where you can get it cheaper but only for some things, like a tune up, oil change, shocks, minor things like that. Most small places do not have a diagnostic machine.

If you plan to get one then
Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance

If you do buy a used one get back with me and I will tell you what you need to do to it, from oil change to tires.
