My son (age 7) has a cockatiel that he has taught a lot of tricks to. As I sit here writing this, my husband is sitting on the floor playing Playstation 3. Disco, my son's tiel keeps flying over to him and landing on his head to preen him.

Tiels are really easy to train, and very easy to love. P-lets are known for their little attitudes. They aren't any harder to train, but usually you have to get through that little attitude to do it. Cockatiels are sweet and loveable by nature.

I think with these 2 species it is just a matter of preference. True, cockatiels are sweet and affectionate by nature. They are easy to tame and some will learn little tricks here and there and whistle a few words. The males are the talkers females are usually more affectionate and quiet. They are extremely fun to have around. I do have one that will lay on her back for you. but, it alot of work to get her to that point. Now she'll lay there and get scritches. My cockatiels love perching on my plate and eating with me. they are terrific companion birds for a first time bird parent. Because they are so gentle mannered and easy to care for.

Parrotlets are also somewhat easy to care for. They are known for being cage aggressive. They are exactly what the name implies mini parrots with large parrot attitudes. They are extremely smart and can learn a variety of tricks and have been known to have a vocabulary of about 100 words. The best time to obtain and bond with a parrotlet is between the ages of 6-12 weeks.

I don't think you can go wrong with either of these species. They are both alot of fun to have around. Go and spend time with each species and see what you prefer. You might find that you'll want one of each and thats ok too :)

First is this a pet shop that deals with other kind of pet cat, dog, reptile etc...? If so not a good idea, get you bird from a breeder who only deals with birds only which are hand raised. This way the bird is use to human. In a pet shop this is not the case. If the birds are on a good sale the birds might be old. And you will need your supply for you bird. Toy cage food etc...... Make sure your budget is enough to cover all these things. Good luck and let me know what you decided in the future.

If you are looking for companionship, I would steer clear of parrotlets - they are very bite-y and it takes lots of patience to raise them right. Cockatiels are a terrific bird, and the males will talk very well. I have a handfed English budgie with whom I am very pleased. He speaks quite well. But he doesn't *do* much. Cockatiels, on the other hand, will not only speak, but will also play.

I would say a cockateil. I have 7 of them, and they are great little companions. Congratulations on your new baby.

well it's not always about which one can do tricks it's about which one your more comfortable with && is a better pet but then it's your pet so you can choose if you like the one that does tricks
