The word sin comes from a Latin word in archery meaning "to miss the mark". When we sin ( are less than absolute perfect) we miss the mark (God's righteousness) yes that is a tall order but God knew we would miss it so he sent Jesus to pay our penality for being less than perfect.

The biggest problem with sin in the 21st century, is when people believe that what they are doing, is not sinning, when it is.
In this day and age, a lot of people beleive they can debate on what is sin, and what is not....like debating with God. However, God's rules are pretty simple....and not open for debate.
The other thing that is a problem is the belief, that once a person is saved, he can do whatever he believes, thinking that it's a catch all for past and future sins.
If you rob a bank, for example, and get arrested, spend some time in jail, once you get out, are you allowed to rob again? no, you'll be arrested again, and spend more time in jail, because obviously, you didn't learn the first time.
lastly, is the myth that man changes, since biblical times, so God's rules should change. Nothing is further from the truth. Sin is sin, and there's not sin less than others. In God's eyes, killing someone, lying to your folks, and then stealing from your neighbor, you sinned three times.
Good luck in a world devoid of faith.

I think sin is about doing anything that violates the way things were created, hence driving a car is a sin because it pollutes the world God created with poisonous fumes and eats up the air in the world. Killing the oceans is a sin. Chopping down the rainforests indiscrimantely to make parking lots is a sin.
Man, day by day through sinful, anti-natural actions, is slowly bringing about domsday.
We are the ones making global warming. We are the ones making the air brown. We are the ones making the air so bad that it makes second hand smoke for babies and old people.
Man keeps on building the Tower of Babylon and God's now left man to his own, no more interference, no more lessons, no more talks with Lot and Moses and Job.
God's last act was Jesus, the last best hope for mankind.
If Jesus were here today, I don't think he'd own a car. He knows better than that.

That's the biblical concept of sin. There is sin, and there is uncleanliness, and they are different sets of codes.
Many Christians, being ignorant of their own religion, consider sin in ways contrary to the bibles, and mix up sin and uncleanliness.
For example, if you think people without a covenant with the Abrahamic god can sin against him, you're just plain ignorant of what is in the bible and are just making things up.

Nope. Using your analogy...Sin is completely shooting away from the whole target.
I believe that sin is just a tool to build fear and to force control on closed minded people that don't have the awareness to see that they are being duped.

This is what sin is:
James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
if you TRULY, TRULY, TRULY do not realize that you are sinning, they you are not sinning. Once you realize that what you are doing is a sin, then you are accountable for your actions.
God is a God of grace, not hateful condemnation
