When I'm in Word and type something like -- m (two dashes, then a space, then a letter, then a space) it changes the two dashes into one solid line. I am wondering if there's any other way to create that character. I prefer the way it looks in some of my documents that I write, and that's the only way I know to get a longer solid dash.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not quite sure i understand if you prefer the longer dash, or if you just want the two shorter dashes next to each other, without them becoming the longer dash. If you want the two dashes, I would just put a space between them to prevent them from auto formatting to the longer dash. If you want the longer dash, seems like the method you use now is perfect. There may be another way to get the longer dash into your work, but if it auto formats that way regardless, then I would say it doesn't really matter if there is another way to achieve this.

You may need to update Word. I am using version 2002 and had no problem when I typed it in.

You have to press the "backspace" bar and the long line will disappear then everything will be O.K
