i think you should block her off in the kitchen, but make sure there is nothing she can get at that could harm her and make sure she has a place to hide(e.g a crate with a blanket over it and some things that smell of you inside so she feels safe) this is so if someone rins the doorbell or phones...etc, she has somewhere to hide and fell ok in.

I don't believe in crating a dog mainly because people are not using them right. Blocking her off in the kitchen, providing everything is up that she can get hurt on. Depends on how long you are leaving her. If not for long then the play pen would be ok too. Make sure what you block her with she can see through. Have lots of toys for her and wee- pads down , fresh water. She is going to be lonely enough with out you so try to make her place a nice place to be while you are gone.

Are you willing to spend the next decade or longer with an animal that will relieve themselves anywhere in your home? See the problem with setting up any area in your home as an animal pen?

The key to your problem is effective crate training. Crate training is a proven method of house training your puppy or adult dog. All it takes is consistency from you and you can reliably train your puppy NOT to use your home as its personal bathroom.

The concept of crate training is that dogs are pack animals and prefer a clean den to rest and sleep. They will not defecate or urinate in the same area where they sleep unless absolutely necessary. So crate training uses the natural instincts of the animal to successfully house train them.

You didn't say how old your puppy is so here's a few basic tips.

1. Puppies under about 10-12 weeks cannot be expected to hold their urine for more than about 2 hours. At about the 12 week point, they can be taught to go outside and can hold for about 4-6 hours depending on when you provide food and water.

2. Take your puppy out just before leaving and remove all food and water if you're only going to be gone a short time.

3. Watch your puppy closely when outside the crate. A puppy only needs about 5 seconds to find a location, squat and go. This means you need to keep your eyes on him every 5 seconds.

4. Accidents are caused by you not watching carefully enough. When a puppy starts to show signs of needing to relieve themselves like sniffing around a lot, circling, or disappearing from sight, be proactive and take them out.

So confine your pet in a den like container, use crate training methods and not allow them the opportunity to use your home as a bathroom.

Buy a crate or or do what I do and use large objects in your house to block off every entrance she can get to. Or better yet clean up the area she will stay in and hope that she doesn't chew anything.
This is what happens when you get a puppy so some things will happen that are bad but just don't over punish them if they act up. They don't know any better. =)

First, how long are you leaving her? If, just while at work, then block off in the kitchen with lots of paper on the floor. This might even work if leaving overnight, but if for over that, you might want to find a kennel.

Been there! I tried to block my English Bulldog pup in the kitchen, he managed to get out. finally I bought a indoor pet kennel for $ 100. dollars, (its a really big one) and I put him and his mom in there, everyday when I go to work, No more stinky surprises or trash all over the house when I get home, we are all much happier! and the kennel even fold up to fit in my car, so when we travel, I can easily take it with us. Definitely the best purchase Ive made in a long time.

I would consider getting a crate. From my experience of having puppies they really dont mind being in them and feel safe. As long as they are not left there for extended periods of time.

Buy her a nice dog crate and crate train her. It will be valuable in the future to have her crate trained, and she will have a safe place of her very own to go to if she wants to be alone.
