yes, you can....I don't have a land-line, and I use my computer....yes, Microsoft has fax capability, but efax is much simpler...just download the efax software....set up an account, and you get your fax-number in minutes...all incoming faxes go directly to your email in format....you can print it, or dumb it....no paper waste...now for the sending faxed, you will need a scanner, like 4 in1 printer have scanners....efax is easy and fast to use for free!
the free fax-number is a Chicago area-code, that the only difference....but if you want a fax-number from your area code, there is a charge!

I have cable Internet , cable TV and my phone runs off a cable modem as well. Comcast or Wide Open West have these services. I just had mine installed for my Miltie Lexmarc fax machine today just for the exact same reason. It's worth checking out. I had the Comcast modem phone service way back when and it was great! I moved out of state for a spell and moved back and am with Wide Open West and all my neighbors said it was awesome. I don't think it is what everyone would call a land line because it runs through a cable. Hope that helps you out some? :o)

I heard an ad for a place on the internet that sends faxes from your computer to others, just as a normal fax machine would. Also, you can recieve faxes from people, they just come to your email. They provide you with a personal fax # I think.
