an empirically unexplainable immaterial part of a person that is connected in a way that cant be explained. it may be a silly notion, who knows. the soul is supposed to represent the "you" that is different from other "substance" that exists. some theories, like those of Buddhism, suggest there is no soul, or “you” that is innate from when an individual is born (they can still use the word person, or individual as a part of language). One is actually a type of bundle, as in everything that exists is one, and the differences arise when this one being “stream” of everything is attached in different ways and packaged differently. The notion of soul, of “you” as separate from everything else is actually the main root of suffering in these kind of belief systems. The soul is a neat idea, but the idea of no-soul (no self) is equally interesting. Check it. Later.

The person is the soul.

In Genesis 2:7 we read that Adam BECAME a living soul, not that he was given one.

In Ezekiel 18:4, 20 we read that the soul that sins WILL DIE, thus becoming a dead soul or dead person.

Animals are also souls, although this is not apparent in some translations of Scripture where it is rendered as "creature" or something similar.

But that animals are souls can be seen even in the KJV at Revelation 16:3: "And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea."

According to Judeo-Christian-Islamic religions, it is the essential internal part of a human being that only God can give to the human, and that every human is born with. It is what remains after death, and the part of you that travels to either Heaven or Hell, based upon your conscious actions while alive. There is no way to measure it or remove it, and only humans have souls (not animals including pets, or objects).

Some other religions believe that every object, whether alive or not, has a soul. Some believe that instead of going to Heaven or Hell the soul is reincarnated on the Earth in another body. And atheists believe there is no such thing as a soul. The only way to know the truth for sure though is to wait and see what happens when you die.

For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.
Is indestructible, eternal, unborn and immutable.
The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind. This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

ٍsince the only reference of the "Soul" is from Holy books, i can only answer from them.
[17.85] And they ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is one of the commands of my Lord, and you are not given aught of knowledge but a little.

Soul is a human construct that gave us a way to talk about "the bit of us that survives death."

from what i've learned in church, our bodies are consisted of three elements: the flesh, the soul, and the spirit.
the flesh is always seeking world pleasures for its own satisfaction.
the soul is basicaly your conscience. that may be when you get thouse doubts about doing something that you may regret later.
and the spirit is just the essence of god that keeps you alive.
