yes always best. they are worried over the sick relative. let them know you are worried about that relative aswell. but tell the person with the sick relative you are ready for them to talk about it and to listen if they want to talk to anyone about it.
never put any pressure on them to talk or to do anything else while the relative is sick, epecially if the relative is not expected to live much longer.
just be as supportive as you can be. remember your friends mind will be on the sick relative and not on hosework or shopping for grocveries etc. so be supportive by making sure the chores get done and that your friend has food in the cupboards. make sure also to cook some of that food and insist that your friend eats. if they are depressed and worried about a loved one then eating is not something they will think about.
by leave alone I mean simply leave them to do as they need to and be at the hospital (for example) if they need to, you may want to drive them or order them a taxi as driving in a depressed or anxious state can lead to an accident which your friends family and you do not want.

go with your friend to the hospital etc, I know it is not fun but if you go and blend in to the background you are at least reminding your friend you are there for them and are ready to talk if they want to.

I hope your friends relative is not too ill and recovers soon. if not my condolences (in advance).
that said life is a terminal illness, we are born, we live a little or a lot and then we die. it could be on the day we are born or over a hundred years later, we never really know when we will die. so you need to try to live each day as best as you can and treat it as your last day on earth.
that is a hard thing to do for some of us (for so many reasons i'm not going to go into it.).
