Why does the Phantom where a mask? and why is his face all messed up when they take it off? What is the importance of this movie? Why do people get all emotional when they see this movie or show?

His face is like that from birth - and that's why he's wearing the mask. He loves beauty (music, art, etc.) and can't stand his own ugliness.

The movie is very sad because he could have had a great career as a singer, composer, architect.... anything really, but his birth defect kept him from that, and forced him to lead a lone existence in the shadows. That, and the lack of human contact/love it caused, ultimately turned him into a monster.

He loves Christine, and he wants all the best for her, but his love is twisted and turns into feelings of possession and anger when she shows interest in Raoul.

In the end, he lets them go, with is an ct of true humanity - he puts his love of Christine over his love of himself, thereby showing true selfishness. But of course, it doesn't help him - he still is left alone and hated by the world, because of a birth defect that wasn't his fault, but forced him to act like the monster everyone saw him as.

The Phantom wears a mask because his face is distorted by birth. His mother abandoned him, leaving him with a mask. In the movie, they show him in a traveling fair, although this is not present in the novel by Gaston Leroux. You can check out a synopsis and other resources at

I think that the movie is very emotionally moving because of the music and storyline. The musical, by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is the longest running musical. (second to Cats, but Poto is still going strong) Music has the ability to evoke powerful emotions because of internal sentiment. If you have ever watched a movie or play without a score, you will notice that it is vastly different as opposed to with a score. When these are written, they play music according to the mood of the scene (lively music with happy scenes, depressing music with sad scenes, etc.) so the music helps the audience associate with the characters to whatever event is occouring in the scene.

Masses of people are able to relate to the characters and situations, whatever they may be. Although the situations and venues are typically not the same, the basic ideas are (the classic love triangle, lost love, death of a close relative, etc.)

Hope this helped

the phantom was a composer and his music was stolen he confronted the thief and a fight ensued a fire was started and the Phantom's face was destroyed by the fire. the importance of the movie was the passion that is felt by some people who may not be beautiful on the outside but they still feel just as much as anyone and he gave the gift of his knowledge to another(musical)his passion became twisted by society's
shallow values that are placed on people who are talented but are denied any recognition because of society's structure.

In the original novel by Gaston Leroux, Erik (the Phantom) is the victim of a hideous birth defect that makes his face resemble a skull with dessicated yellow skin wrapped around it and only wisps of hair on the top of his head.

In the Claude Rains and Herbert Lom film versions of the Phantom (both superior to the musical film, imho), the main character's face is disfigured when acid is thrown on it.

he wears the mask because he was born like that.....people get emotional because they feel sorry. since the phantom was little he was despised by everyone...and he was ashamed of himself.
