I don't see this done on other foods like cans of soup.

The same reason car companies give a MSRP...

to encourage retailers to sell at a price that will maximize their (snack food company's) profits.

No matter what the store charges, the snack food company will have already been paid -- if the store sells it for cheap, they sell more and buy more from the snack food company.

I dont know, but heard that walmart gets 2nds and thats why they can be cheaper. Once I got a nasty old kit kat from there, plus Ive seen them put stickers over exp. dates and no longer buy foods there.
