Why is it waiters, staff and employees on cruise lines and at company functions burrough throw attendees?
Am I alone here? is there a reason for this? I was at my company X-mas party talking to someone and someone who worked there buried their back into my shoulder, without even saying excuse me.

Is courtesy dead? Oh and btw, im not going to just move if he's coming by and I don't happen to revert my attention towards focusing on him and where he's walking. That would be called pandering.

Yes, some catering employees can be very rude. Once, at a sit down dinner, I asked for a glass of water and the employee had the nerve to tell me that I could get water from the bartender. I made sure that I got the name of the catering company so that I would never hire them for another function. If you have any pull at your company, tell the person who does the events planning about rude employees from a catering co, etc. Why are they rude? The reasons are as numerous as rude ppl. Especially on cruise lines, many of the employees are jealous because they see the passengers as rich ppl while they are poor. In some countries, American working class ppl are still viewed as wealthy by comparison. I would be extra careful on cruise ships (e.g. by not taking cruises) bc there have been incidents of young women (and some men) being assaulted or even killed by angry cruise line employees. OK, ppl will say that most employees aren't that bad, but one sexual assault or murder is bad enough. One doesn't need to pay $2000 to be assaulted or killed, one can get that for free.

You have every right to be upset by rude staff. You and the ppl that hired the catering co., cruise line represent the profit. The waiters and staff represent expense and overhead. If they are not satisfied with their wages or working conditions, then they need to find another job, get an advanced degree, etc. If waiters and staff are offended by these comments, then they need to remember that this is still America and this is still the yahoo answers section where we can express our opinions without asking their permission. When ppl hire a catering co. or go on a cruise, they are spending their hard earned money. It is not the customers' duty to tolerate bad behavior from servers and hired staff. I have done my share of low paid (or no pay)work so I get to step on the soap box now and then.

Do you mean "burrow"? Not "burrough". Borrough is not a word. To say burrow "through" someone (not "throw") it sounds like you're trying to say they ran into you? Not burrow throw, because that would be a hole an animal dug as a habitat and throw as in to throw a ball. If I have this straight and you mean why do they slam into you, my answer is that I have never experienced this problem on a cruise ship. Either you made them angry and they lost respect for you or it has to do with you being a male and since I am female I just haven't been treated this way by men.(If they happen to have been male employees of the cruise line) If you try not to generalize one person's bad behaviour and relate it to all employees of cruise lines, you will have a better time on you next cruise. Have fun!

I thought about this question a bit, and cannot honestly remember that happening to me without an immediate appology from the server.

If a server is coming through with a tray of whatever, I always move out of the way (common manners) as the server really has their hands full.

If this happens to you again, with no appology forthcomming, you could ask them to be more careful, or to take it easy. But no major confrontation. If server is rude, there is always management you can complain to.

Lets face it wait staff is not the most glamorous job or the easiest, those trays are probably very heavy. However, the staff is there to ensure the party attendees have a good time. I think a nice firm, "Pardon YOU." is a very nice way to get your point across without causing too much disruption to the party itself.

having jobs through thick and thin, supporting myself through college and into grad school... servers/waiters should be given more courtesy than you're willing to give. move out of their way! they have a job to do and its all about time management. you should be the one saying excuse me... youre in their office having a good time. it makes me furious to think there are millions of people like you who have no idea what its like to work in a restaurant especially a high class establishment. Yes, i agree some waiters should show more respect but during high volume, taking care of 5 tables and a party of 20 ... its all about the money. so next time stop to consider how nerve racking it is for a server/waiter. like i said.... youre in their office having a good time. and they arent just servers there for you so pull whatever it is out of your ...... and realise you should be the one saying excuse me.

Because they have work to do, and there are dumbasses who won't get out of the way!

Just get off your high horse, get out of their way, and let them do their job of serving you! And by the way remember to tip at the end of the event!
