I don't recall whose quote that is, but it does have merit.

At some level all of us have committed at least one crime or broken some law. Every driver, for example, has exceeded the speed limit somewhere, even if it was accidental. Perhaps it isn't so much that the stupid ones that get caught but the ones that persist in crimes that endanger or harm others.

Oooh...

Someone said the same about Nixon: "The only thing he did wrong was to get caught".

But, in answer to your question, YES. Regardless of our ideals or intent, we are ALL potential criminals. It lies within our reaction to authority/governance per se: we find reassurance within our legends of accepted "outlaws": Robin Hood; William Tell; Jesse James; Ned Kelly.

The list of the "proscribed" persons includes: "Che" Guevara; Ho Chi Minh; the Chicago Five; Johnandyoko; et alia.

It (outlaw behaviour) becomes an acceptable reaction against the status quo only as long it can show political reason for its being.

Outside of this notion, all is criminal behaviour.

Someone knocks at your door: you panic and use the .357 magnum next to your bed... it's your wife and you just shot her...

As a survivalist, you have everything from a K-bar to a .50 cal sniper rifle... there is noise and you're sure that someone is 'coming for you'. When the silhouette indicates a man, you open-up with full automatic fire. You just killed your wife again.

Is there a point behind these stories? Yes. Criminality is adjudged by a court. But, they get it wrong too...

It's true, in an abstract way.

If by criminal, they mean by 'sinning' and doing the things that you shouldn't be doing, then yes, humans are by nature criminals. Humans' basic nature is still for survival and it's obvious from the news reports every day how these instincts manifest themselves, as extremes.

As for only the stupid ones are caught - well, the smart ones keep themselves in check with the rational part of themselves don't they? =)

No, it's wrong on more than one point.

The first half could be argued till we're all blue in the face but the second is flat-out wrong. Many smart criminals are caught.
