I've read the other answers and learned from them that those who follow Satanism don't actually believe in Satan . Isn't that an oxymoron? It is like saying I'm a Buddhist but I don't believe in Buddha, or I am a christian but do not believe in Christ. The fact is, there may be differences in how the worship is practiced, but both worship Satan. Satanism at the very least promotes Satan by having it as the name of their religion.

I'm not a Satanist but there have been a couple on Yahoo and I read their posts and checked out the basic tenets of their beliefs. From my understanding (and I may be wrong) Satanists don't actually worship or even believe in Satan. Satan is merely seen as a symbolic figure in Satanism. I am guessing Devil worshippers believe Satan is real and worship as such.

You get two forms of Satanism that I'm aware of.
The first kind has nothing to do with Christianity's Satan. It is a religion that focuses on pleasure. It's about not denying yourself all the things you enjoy, be it reading or having orgies. It's followers don't believe in the Christian God.
The second kind is the Christian's idea of Satanism or Devil Worshiping as you call it. These Satanists do believe in the Christian God, and they worship Satan, God's nemesis. They focus on pissing God off, and worshiping Satan.

I would say, having read the Satanic Bible, that Satanism is anti-Christian and seeks to destroy the Church without necessarily believing in the supernatural; Satan Worship actually believes in the existence and supremity of the devil, although this seems fairly ridiculous to me because if you believe in the devil, you believe in God, and God's Word points out that the devil ultimately loses. Why serve the losing side of eternity?

There are two different forms of Satanism. You have the Theistic form which views Satan as an actual deity. Then you have LaVeyan Satanism which is more Atheistic where as they don't believe in an actual Satan. Devil worship is something altogether different.

Its basically the same. A very disrespectful way of hating God. Both Satanism and Devil Worshiping revolve around witch craft. These people are doomed.

actually, I don't believe there's any difference.

Of course, there are satanists who are a bit more sophisticated in their approach to worship. People like Jay Solomon, who believed in a principle of self-determination without actually believing in a person called satan.
... People like Anton St. LaVey... who used satanism as a way of promoting his own views... and his own kind of showmanship... who probably never really TRULY worshipped satan.

I imagine that people who are JUST doing Devil Worship don't get so involved in the theological details...

satanism and devil worshiping is different. Satanism is when you beilve and follow the devil with devil worshiping its basically the oposite of worshiping God cause you still bellive there is a God but in Satanism there is no God as in the Heavenly God.

most Satanists do not believe in the devil
the name is simply used as a means to be anti Christian ... not anti Christ
so that is a big difference between Satanism and Devil worshipping

Not a Satanist, but I am editting a book on Diabolism right now.

They are both (in their current forms) Diabolist offshoots of Ceremonial Magic, but Satanism is patently atheistic.
