We are thinking of relocating to the LA area and I found a great house that says it's in the West Adams area. What're the neighborhood, people, and amenities like?

It was a MILLION dollars! How can anyone afford a house in a decent area if the "tough parts of town" cost 7 figures? :(

Well the good news is its very near USC and there are allot of cool historic houses there. The bad... Well, its a tough neighborhood. Mostly low income and heavily impacted by a variety of urban pathologies. Nearby shopping for basic needs is limited at best and while there have been significant improvements to the area its still very much block by block. If you have children the local school options are not very appealing although there is a new science magnet at exposition park. If you are up for being an urban pioneer id say go for it but I'd rent first before I bought to see if you are up for the lifestyle

West Adams is very centrally located. It has a lot of historic old houses, and many of the owners are interested in preserving them. It does border on some more run-down neighborhoods, but there does not appear to be much danger that it will become seedy itself, because of the interest in preserving this neighborhood. More likely the trend is that surrounding neighborhoods will also continue to improve, as West Adams has. It is not that close to the beach or the hills, so if your vision of LA is to be a beach or hill person, it might not be what you are looking for.
