I've just purchased a 97 chevy z-24. I want to replace the factory speakers, either both the front and back, or just one or the other. I realize i'll probably need an amp, but what i'd like is advice on what I should chose. Im going for louder, more clear sound. Id like to keep the budget around $300-400. Thanks in advance for your advice!

You have already accomplished steps 1 & 2. By deciding what you want to gain (louder and clearer), you took care of step 1. And by setting a budget you'vr completed #2. Most people seem to bypass step #1.

#3 Choose equipment.
Your cars factory speaker locations are at the front door with 4'x6' speakers and 6'x9' in the rear deck. In order to focus on your need of clearer sound, I would replace the front speakers with an above average pair of 4x6 coaxial speakers. Approx. cost is $100 uninstalled. Brand names; Polk, Infinity, Rockford Fosgate, JL Audio, choose reputable brand names.

Next, in order to gain more volume, step up the factory head unit (deck/stereo). Make sure it has RCA outputs in order to have the ability to easily upgrade to an external amplifier in the future. Also look for an auxiliry input to be able to add Ipod etc.. Estimated cost is $200 Brand names, Pioneer,Kenwood, Alpine. Don't buy cheap stuff! Spend the money for quality equipment, its worth it.

#4 Choose install accessories such as a wireharness and mounting kits. These are key to doing the job properly.

#5 and most important step, make sure it is installed properly. Proper installation is going to make or break your sound system. The big box stores that offer installation, can often be "hack" shops. They sometimes use crimp connectors instead of soldering in order to save time and money.

I gave you an estimation of
$100 speakers
$200 head unit
$50-100 installation and accessories.

When it comes time for another upgrade, you will probably want to add some bass to round out the sound.

for a cleaner sound, you would want some component speakers up front, 5 1/4 or 6.5 in size and 3 ways in the rear with a 4 channel amp, sub you can get one 10 inch. The only possible way to buy on a 300- 400 budget will be to shop ebay. You can get a good used 4 channel amp for around $50.00. Phoenix Gold Components speakers will run u about $35.00 new on ebay. You can get a pair of Phoenix Gold X10d4 subs for about 60.00 new on ebay. Try to find a Phoenix Gold mono, 600 watt amp to push the subs. You can buy on a budget but u have to know what u want. You can also try websites like, www.sounddomain.com, www.partsexpress.com, www.millionbuy.com,

A mono amp is used for one sub or a pair of subs under pressure out the two in parallel or in sequence. a 2 channel is only wat it says, an amp used for 2 channels. First if those numbers for the amps are the max scores, then you will want extra ability for the Kappa Perfects. they're ability hungry. i might get 2 of those Infnity amps for the Infinity subs. and as quickly as you get the Kappa Perfects tuned you wont even want the solo baric. you will additionally want a capacitor or yet another battery in case you nonetheless want your motor vehicle to start
