As long as my arms aren't pinned against my sides with his legs, I would defend the downward punches. Then I would push him back with my arms, then pop both my knees up quickly to my chest and kick him off & try to get back to my feet as quickly as possible.
Now in the event I can't use my arms, I would try to roll to one side & slip out from underneath & hope his knees and still on the ground. If they are then I'd jump on his back and look for a rear naked choke, an ankle lock, or a kneebar.

Ok,
I have been in this spot twice.once as a kid and once as an adult (twenty something)
Follow me,and pay attention,I normally don't teach for free.
You are on your back an "Idiot" is on your chest.
With all you have reach or make a move for the face.
This works even if the "Idiot" has a hold of your wrist or is holding your arms.Reach full speed for the face,The "idiot's" reaction is to pull his head back. You pull up your legs,(in that instant),and cross your ankles under his chin. With "Full Power" you bring your legs down, imagine trying to smash your heels on the concrete. This bashes the back of the "Idiot's" head into the concrete.Lift and repeat as needed. If this is done too many times,or with too much force the back of the "idiot's" head becomes a bloody "Mushy" mess, and they will expire on the spot.
So use good judgment.
Well,I hope your happy,I've taught you how to kill someone sitting on your chest trying to punch you out.
Oh,did I pass your test?
Do you think I am likely to have my a** kicked in a street fight?
I have used this move and it works like a charm.

well i haven't been in a street fight and had "someone" sit on my chest and had to get out of it before ; )
that isn't the problem and you know it
the problem becomes if they are able to also pin your arms down as well while on your chest! In that case i agree with the other 2-3 answerers...your best bet is to begin to thrust forward in hopes up knocking him/her off balance, tilting them forward a bit as they are most likely going to be using both their arms "pounds" you. Even if they are using one hand to balance they would have to be on fingertips... At any rate i would be rolling around and thrusting like a mad woman...the person would have to be hitting me for quite some time beforehand for me to not get loose is all i have to say or have me in a drug induced state because if my adrenalin is going i WILL break free!
and when i do...i am going to run like the wind and never look back!! most likely though i'll know the jerk!

It would depend on whether or not the opponent was able to pin my arms with their knees.
If my arms would be free I could block his punches or lock our arms taking away his weapon. This is because if he was sitting on me his legs would no longer be a threat. If I could lock his arms with mine, I would force us both to roll using his weight for momentum.
If my arms were locked down, I would have to act more quickly knowing that a person with unprotected face can only take some many punches before they lose consciousness. First would try shaking them off by attempting to roll to my side. If this doesn't work, I would place both my feet flat on the ground and then push off. I feel confident I would have enough strength to lift both of our bodies off the ground if only slightly, giving me wiggle room allowing me to free my arms or roll out of this position.

I would first guard my face with my arms, NOT punch back up at him.
secondly I would try to bridge to escape. As I am likely on concrete I would be using my shoulders not my head as is/was common in wrestling when I first began to learn.
That seems to work for me best.
failing that I would (probably have been punched many times), attempt to turn and create space and free a leg. I don't like this as it occupies my hands and I have a damn good bridge.
EDIT: JIM R vs. Idiot = Idiot by ARMBAR!

you grab the fists and rub them on the concrete then you post your hips up and shrimp out at the same time you can place your hand on his armpit and help move him upward and away.
keep your head close to him so he cant get a good shot at you.
if that doesnt work you can punch his coin purse.lol

nothing.id already be dead or unconcious to be put in that position.but if it did happen i would cover my head first and then attack any way i could .open vital spots would be a first option.the first priority would be cover up second would be to do maximum damage as quick as possible so as to get back on my feet, its easy to fight one person on the ground but near impossible if he has friends.and i would do anything i had to do and that means anything.rule no 1,there are no rules.

If he is sitting on my chest, his center of gravity is further forward than mine is.
I would cover my face and roll to my stomach. In one motion, I would then raise my lower back using my legs. You can either roll him or you scoot out between his legs.
Either way, you have got to react and move or you will be taking a worse beating than you already are.

"Shrimp" out. Keep "shrimping" until I get free, try to post and get to my feet because I am not a ground grappler.
I guess my big concern is how did I get in this position. I would not allow myself to get into this position as this is not what I train for.
