Yes and no I am half Native American could go to school here in New Mexico and have meals and lodging for a small price very cheap than most college's but you have to live here the school is http://www.sipi.bia.edu/ But as far as a college he can pick and choose from no way! I would have done that a long time ago! Also if he does go here - He needs A CIB! If he's Indian he will know what that means and if not for FYI it's certificate Indian blood.

There are some benefits for Native people concerning college.
If you are enrolled in your tribe then there are more benefits.
Some colleges accept enrolled Natives and don't require them to pay tuition. And there are MANY scholarships for enrolled Natives both tribal and general.
If you can prove descendancy then there are still some colleges that will let you in without paying tuition and some scholarships.
For one college in this category see college in Boulder, Colorado.
It is more true that colleges do not have this programs.
However nearly every college has programs for students of color that offer things such as free tutoring etc.. and maybe a small scholarship. For these programs you don't have to prove anything, just self declare.
I am a Native woman. I hope this helps!

My boyfriend is native american and there were certain scholarships for native americans he couldn't apply to because native american wasn't listed on his birth certificate. His ancestors never kept a clear record of his lineage for protective purposes. Needless to say, he got screwed.

The ones I've hard of getting some help for it were attending a tribal college, so it may or may not be restricted to just that. Your friend...hate to break it to him, but he needs to look at reality and have more of a plan if this weak assumption does not pan out...

20%, right?
I might be 25% something, 50% something else, 25% something else because I have *four* grandparents.
If it's my great-grandparents, you can do those units by 12.5% (eighths). Maybe I am 5/8ths (or 62.5%) some ethnic group if five of my eight great-grandparents are belong to that group.
Would love to know how your friend has FIVE grandparents.
