My GSD puppy is 5 months now. I taught her not bark on neighbors and people walking alone my fences. I brought her to off-leash park every weekend so she socials with people and other dogs well, especially with people. Also I trained her basic obedience everyday, sit, stay, lie down, come, ect. Now I have a little concern, could all these reduce her protective instinct. For ex. could she not bark or alert if there is a strange try to enter or already entered in my yard? Please let me know your experience of protective side of this breed. Thanks

Awesome job---that's exactly what to do. A well-socialized dog is the best way to go and being well trained will not in any way diminish her ability to protect you if (for example) someone broke into your home.

Five months is a bit young for her to start "protecting" anything. She is still a baby and counts on YOU to do the protecting. Just keep doing what you are doing.

A well-socialized dog will only act aggressively if there is a threat to you---otherwise it will be happy and friendly. Exactly what you want.

If you've taught her not to bark at people outside the fence and you want her to bark at people INSIDE the fence, try to teach her that by rewarding barking when people step through the gate.

Personally, I wouldn't worry. I had a lab/shepherd/doberman mix who was the world's friendliest dog---until some drunk/stoned guys tried to break into my apartment. Then he turned into Cujo and scared the guys off by growling, snarling and throwing himself at the door to try and get them.

Enjoy your puppy it sounds like she's a great dog.

They will start between 4 and 6 months if they are from a good line. She will want to protect you and your property, but in female sheps it often takes longer. Socializing is a good thing -- you want a good dog who wont attack people or growl. As she matures she will know strangers and bark. Get her into SHUTZHUND training. If she is no good at it dont blame her, a lot of it is her sex. Altho females can be good guard dogs. You will notice police use mainly, almost exclusively MALE DOGS. If she is AKC, learn all you can about the exceptional lines of shepherds(go to a web site). When she has had 2 cycles you can buy seed from an exceptional male and have her inseminated and you will have 7 to 10 pups in 60 days or so -- you'll cover the $2k to $3k for the semen and you'll get the male pick of the litter for your guard dog, and be sure to socialize him too -- it will not keep him from being protective.
My male was already protective at 4 months. A friend went to pat me on the arm and he jumped between us letting the fellow know he wouldnt allow any 'hittting'.

You are socializing her so she will be able to go out with you-so she will be less likely to be aggressive. She may protect your home (alert you to a stranger) as most dogs will, but if you want a dog for protection then you need a proffessional trainer not so much an aggressive breed. You should have studied this prior to getting a dog.

You are doing a great job with your dog,... dont worry about her being protective.... NO ONE is going to mess with you!

Kepp her socialized and friendly and if there is ever a situation where she needs to be protective-believe me she will!

It is actually not a good sign when your dog is protective of you, generally this means that she considers you as one of her resources and thinks she is the leader.
If you are training correctly like it sounds like you are, she will look to you for cues.
Eventually she will alert you of someone at the door.

She will also use her instincts, my Rottweiler would allow our landlady to show our apartment while we werent home and she was roaming free.(SHe knew her and I trained her that way)
Yet while she was tied outside waiting for me to grab take-out coffee, someone was looking like they wanted to steal her and she turned and started aggressively barking at that man sensing his intentions.

German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, you have nothing to worry about!

I certainly have years of adventure with this breed, and extremely own one myself. Any canines would properly be good with childrens and cats, this is only the way you enhance them and their genetics. i might advise you get a German Shepherd canines from puppy or AKC teach lines. The "actual" German Shepherd canines (german respectable) may well be way too plenty for many folk. i might advise getting a temperament try completed on the mothers and dads, or see in the event that they have their canines good Citizen award. next, elect the pup this is the main submissive. this would not advise the smallest one, however. My canines become the runt of the clutter, although he's the only one able to being experienced in bitework. in case you nonetheless are not optimistic, and your breeder can not advise a pup for you, i might elect yet another clutter from yet another breeder. to blame breeders ought to do something they are able to to verify the spectacular pup to the spectacular kinfolk. in case you're thinking of procuring for this pup from a puppy shop, think of returned. maximum of those puppies are there for a reason. ninety 9% of all hip dysplacia circumstances I see in GSDs are of puppy shop doggies. visit the animal look after and get a advantageous pup from there, or visit a to blame breeder this is able to matching the spectacular pup to you!

Socializing your dog with other people will make him/her a little more welcoming to strangers, however the instict will always be there and if he/she feels threatened or feels that her guardians are being threatened that instinct will kick in.
