There are some church people who say humans have souls (whaterver that is), so I'm wondering where that soul goes when you are asleep and unconscious.

Replies from relgion scholars, and anybody else, appreciated.

On the floor with the rest of your shoe...
Its up to you what you believe, some say it is held inside you, some say it is bound to you by energy centers through out the body, some say it floats slightly above your body.
There are huge debates and research papers into this, such as Lucid dreaming, Astral Projection and Out of Body Projection and Experiences.

Its up to you really to decide, a soul is still not proven to exist, so you can say it floats off to the toaster to stay warm, so it doesnt make you cold in the morning, when you wake up.

The soul is a principle of life. Since it's a principle it shouldn't be bound by 3-D space, like your body.

So if you are asleep or unconcious, you are still alive. If you are alive, you, have a soul. Therefore, all living matter has a sort of soul as it is a principle of life.

That principle of life will 'leave' you when you die, because you are not alive.

Take note that the soul is NOT a ghost.

Your soul is always with you. It is not an entity that comes and goes as it pleases. It is given to us at the earthly birth and is not going to go anywhere until our bodies die. The soul is the part of a human that has somewhere to go since our bodies remain on earth and decay.

I believe that if your body has to be kept alive by machines, the spirit is no longer in the body. In this unconscious time, the spirit is free to wander the earth, explore the heavens (or hells for that matter) and do whatever else it wants. If it feels it is not yet ready to go, then the spirit re-enters the body (coming out of a coma). This is all speculation..but to me, this is what only makes sense.

Your soul goes anywhere it chooses to go when your body sleeps. I imagine mostly it would want to feel reunion with God (All That Is) again, after feeling separated for most of the day.

Your soul stays put right where it is, in your body, when you are asleep or unconscious.

If you're dead, your soul is joined with Christ in heaven, that is, if you are a follower.

I don't like to think where it will go if you aren't a follower.

Many times your soul leaves your body. What you are "dreaming" is not really a dream. I have visited the other side in my dream. I saw a dear friend and my Mother. Mine is not a unique story.

Your soul is returned to its creator and he sends back the souls to those people whose life is meant to continue and he can hold on to some souls who die during their sleep. This is why in Islam we have a doa' we say when we ake up " thank god that returned life to us after he put us to death (temporary death during our sleep) and to whom we will all return "
