The only way to increase your resting metabolic rate is to increase your lean body mass (i.e. increase the amount of muscle in your body). This works because muscle requires more energy (calories) than fat does at a resting rate. This is why strength training programs are so important to permanent weight loss.

In addition to cardio and eating healthy, make sure you are lifting weights 3-4 times a week. Also, DO NOT make the mistake of only working out your upper body. Your leg muscles are the biggest muscles in your body and developing these muscles is the easiest way to increase your lean body mass. Get lifting, eat healthy, and you're on your way. Good luck.

I lost 105 pounds in 6 months. Here is how I did it.
1. Every morning get up and walk for 45 minutes. You can start with less time, but you want to get up to 45 minutes, and it must be fast walk. You want your heart rate to go up. It must be in the morning, it kick starts your metabolism.
2. I cut out Red Meat, and fatty foods. Boneless skinnless chicken breast, baked, or grilled, rice and vegetables (steamed).
3. Eat half. Just eat half of what you normally eat. Put 1/2 on your plate, and put the rest away. Cook less. When you go to fast food, get salads only. Or grilled chicken. No fries, only diet soda. Or water.

It will work, once you get into a routine, you will get hooked on the results, and you will keep the routine. It has been over a year for me.

Also start counting your calories. Write them down. You would be amazed as to how much more aware you are of your caloric intake, if you actually write it down. We recently discovered a site that offers a great program that counts calories, as well as keeps track of everything. It allows multiple users, so everyone in the family can keep track. They offer a free 7 day trial, and so far I am very impressed with the product. Try the 7 days and see. It allows you to add the exercise that you do during the day, which increases the amount of calories you can take in. Very Cool!!

1. Eat PROTEIN in the mornings. Try to aviod eating high-in-carb meals early in the day because all this does is take you on an "energy rollercoaster" where you become very lively and then suddenly become very tired and its keep you eating more. Protein rich foods such as eggs, almonds, or Stallone's High Protein pudding (a canned chocolate, vanilla, or banana flavored pudding where there are only 100 calories, and 20 grams protein).

2. Drink a cold glass of water before meals. Drinking a glass of cold water before you eat shrinks your stomach so u have less of an appetite.

3. Always eat breakfast. if you dont, you will be craving foods (especially high in sugar) to get more energy. most overweight people dont eat in th morning because they arnt particularly hungry at this time of day when they are trying to lose weight, but it doesnt help to skip it.

4. weight lifting! the old myth: cardio, cardio, cardio. weight lifting wont give you huge muscles unless you work out like arnold schwarsenegger (i cant spell, lol). actually, weight lifting will get rid of fat, tone your figure, and burn calories even after you've stopped working out. this is key.

5. lots of sleep. a survey recently taken showed that people who did not get enough sleep were more more likely to be overweight due to lack of energy the next day.

if u have more questions, im willing to help, just emial me (ur email address wont even be shown) with questions. i just am in a rush! bye!

Eating smaller meals up to 6 times a day, even if your not hungry, grab an apple and eat it... it will keep your body working all day.

And ALWAYS eat breakfast, if not your body will reserve the last thing you ate before you went to bed, since it knows it wont have anything to work off the next morning.
