Consumer Reports just put out a list of the best used cars under 10k. Search for it.

Mazda 6 is good though. Its pretty balanced in terms of luxury, safety and sporty features.

2003 era Malibu if you want safety-nothing compares, but its about the least cool car in the world.

Avoid the last model of Sentras at all costs. It was redesigned because of how unsafe it is.

Honda Accords are great as long as you get the latest body style (anything older than that you need to make sure to get an I4).

Camrys are usually a safe bet. Nothing special, but dependable. The ones youd be able to afford are pretty much just a new shell on the old design, so you know everything is made well and parts will be easy to find when it breaks.

The "hand-down" answer is the toyota Corolla! It is one the most reliable cars in the world and always has been. It's inexpensive comes in diffent styles...some are sporty. You will not regret purchasing that car.
