Well-at this point due to her age, likely that the doc will only perform an office exam-she won't be able to get a mammogram at her age. She could petition her insurance for a baseline test to be done now if her doc supports her on this-but it isn't likely to get the ok. Talk to her about when, and how, to do a monthly breast self exam. Then if she has a lump, she can see the doctor. Remember he is her dad and seeing the family fight after the trauma of losing her mother isn't good for her mental health. Plus, dad may want to bury his head in the sand-yes BC is sometimes found more in families, and as a parent it would be horrific to see your spouse die and then always wonder if your child may face the same illness. Cut him slack.

He can't stop his daughter if she wants to get examined in the first place. Yes he's right you should do it in the shower - at the same time, after a certain age (or when at risk) you should get one every year. The girl will know what is best for her and if not she will carry the consequences. I'm 19 and get checked for uterus cancer every year since that is very high in my family. My mother or father never pushed me to the decision either. She's 19. Just say what you feel but stay out of her decision making.

Experience should tell you that men have no practical or technical knowledge of the female breast whatsoever.

Excepting doctors, of course.

Talk to your niece - take her to a doctor if necessary - and explain, and have the doctor explain again, that with a family history of breast cancer, she needs regular, clinical screenings in addition to monthly self-exams.

You might also want to lighten up on your brother in law - he may be an idiot, but your sister loved him enough to have his baby.

Forget about him, have the conversation with your niece, he's an idiot. Your niece must tell her physician about her family history of breast cancer and certainly have her breasts checked yearly by a professional. What in the world is wrong with her father!

I would take her to the dr. myself. If you can't afford to do that, talk to your niece about how important testing is. Help her gather information on the increased risk if you have a relative with breast cancer. Maybe if she is armed with evidence and tells her dad she is really worried and would feel better with a dr.'s guidance, he would reconsider. Maybe he is scared he will lose her too. Let her point out that if it is caught early enough they could avoid another disaster.

Does this guy have insurance? All he'd need to pay is the co-pay. If my young wife died of breast cancer I'd make sure my daughter was professionally checked every year.

Sorry for your loss.

Your niece is an adult.
Talk to her and ask her what is on her mind.
She might have a lot to say.
Share some of your thoughts with her and let her know that you are there to support her.

I would take your niece out for a day of fun, (shopping, nails....) and take the opportunity to talk to her about the importance of getting an exam...especially when it hits so close to home for her..Are you in any position to pay for an exam for her?? If so, do it... or maybe insurance would cover it for her??
She really needs to get herself checked sooner than most...very important...

you should take your niece aside and tell her the truth about breast cancer, and encourage her to take care of herself. offer to take her to the doctor if her father won't help. god, what an asshole.
