He outgrew his crib, so he now sleeps in a playpen.
Keep in mind that I hate those toddler beds. They are so unsafe, plus my son sleeps wild and will stand up in that little bed and throw his self out. Even though the bed have rails, I feel they are unsafe.
Any other suggestions.

I bought a regular full-sized mattress for my son when he was that age and stuck it on the floor. It is much wider than a toddler bed, so even when he rolls around he doesn't fall off. And even if he did, since the mattress is on the floor, it's only an inch drop.

Why not get him a platform twin bed.. They are only about 1 1/2 feet off the floor with the mattress and thats not far to fall! I mean my 3 1/2 year old still rolls out of bed sometimes so that is always possibility until they get older...

We had to put our girl in a toddler bed at 9 mos. (she was an early walker an even earlier climber). If you don't like the toddler beds you will just have to put him in a regular bed. The toddler would be safer as it is lower. Take the rails off so he won't get his legs caught when he jumps out. If you are concerned about him wandering at night if he wakes up put a baby gate in the doorway, unless the doorway is at the top of the stairs.

Just buy him a twin sized bed. Who cares if he falls out? At that age, Im sure he falls a lot. As long as you have carpet on your floors, he wont get hurt. It really shouldnt be that big of deal, really.

I found this really cool bed at walmart. Its a twin sized bed that has sides for younger kids too. It goes up to age 11.
