I tend not to ask deep questions on the outset. Just ask about what you are truly interested in. As in, you know what you like... so ask questions based on things you know and like. If you're a music junkie, ask about music. A movie buff? Ask about that. Computer geek? Talk about technology without going into too much detail. Couch potato? Talk about the tube. Bookworm? Talk about books. This allows the other person to give an honest opinion and you know the topic. Make the small talk; it might lead to something deeper.
Otherwise, it just looks like you're trying to avoid being awkward. At first, it is awkward and neither of you want it to be. Keep it light. You could even go for that whole "would you rather" game. Lesser of two evils or better of two goods.
Hope this helps.

What they originally wanted to be when they grew up? It can make for other questions to follow such as how come you never fell through with it? Or what is it like to be doing that now?

Ask your partner what he or she likes. After that you got a perfect conversation. Then find stuff in common with both of you.
