Where do the rules come from? Why should I go along with any rules other than my own if God does not exist?

Nothing.
We should do as we please.
If there is no God.
Why be moral?
Why have character?
We should be our own Gods--then the killing would break out in full force. The strongest and the most brutal would be the last left.
But there is a God who keeps it under control.
Within the person, beyond the persons perception.

Why do you need god in order to respect the earth? Why do you need religion to be a "good" person?
Human instinctively know what is right and wrong. We are further taught by our parents what is right and wrong, acceptable, and moral. I'm an atheist and we've taught my son right from wrong. He consistently says please and thank you when we are out in public; his teacher says he is kind and cooperative with his fellow students; he voluntarily helps people, even strangers, without being asked; he takes care of our pets every day.
Were we to say that people without god are awful people who don't follow rules and are immoral, how do you explain my son's behavior?
Be good to others and the earth, not because god says so and you'll burn if you don't, but because it's the right thing to do. Period.

Have you ever noticed that the basic rules are the same no matter the god? Morality doesn't come from religion. That should be blatantly obvious.

Because you live in a society made up of other individuals. Are you seriously only prevented from killing somebody by your belief in an invisible fellow? I feel very sorry for anyone who finds life so pointless that they must invent an omnipotent "point".

How about the basic tenets of human survival? If you start acting like a complete sociopathic asshole, you won't be getting very far in life. Love, community, procreation are all basic to our humanity irregardless of a higher power.
