You need to have the cd for XP home to repair XP home installations. You can install XP Prof. on top of XP home if you would like to though. You you decide to do that, make sure you backup everythin that you want to keep on your computer because it will be erased if you install XP Prof. over XP home.

Hey If you got the XP professional CD put the cd in and upgrade to the Professional. There's not really a difference other then Professional is better and more secure. (Just as easy to use)

I suppose you are thinking about repair console in win XP. Yes you can. If you are thinking about reinstaling the operating system on the same partition and leaving the system intact, you can, but I wouldn't do it because some programs may not work and generaly from my experience that is a bad thing to do.
