speaking in tongues. Someone replied that you can tell if the speaking in tongues is genuine if there is an interpreter present. Can someone please explain how this works? Thanks! =0)

Yep. The guy who says he can interpret can say that God is saying anything that he wants. So you have a person speaking gibberish and another guy saying that gibberish means God is telling everyone here to do something.

Pretty sweet setup actually.

In Scripture, there are two things discussed with regard to "tongues".
First, the word "tongue" meaning language, it tells us that if you go to another land where you do not understand the language, and you are going there to teach the Word of God, then take an interpreter. Thats just
common sense.
BUT;
the tongues spoken on Pentecost Day, in the Book of Acts, was a tongue that was understood by every language that heard it, and even right down to the dialect of the community where each person was from.
It was not an unknown tongue, just the opposite. Understood by all.
When you hear of people from a church speaking in "tongues", and it is not understood by each and every person present, regardless of what their native language is, if it is NOT understood by all, then either the person is faking, or else it is satanic. I've heard it before; the prime root of baal; you will hear them saying over and over; b...l, b...l, b....l - its straight from Satan himself.
There will be one time when the Holy Spirit will speak through people, and that is only when (and not until) Antichrist is here, stating he is Christ, and Gods Elect will be delivered up before him; we are told not to premeditate what we will say, but that given us in that hour, that is what we are to speak, for it is not us that speak, but the Holy Spirit that speaks through us.
Besides that, and that time isn't here yet,
you either have a fake, or its satanic.
There is no middle road here, Biblically.

I am sorry that I missed the question Actually there are two forms of tongue. With one it is for the teaching and edification of the community of gatherers, this does require an interpretation which comes from another person or sometimes the person. The proof is in scripture and is backed up within. The 2nd is a prayer language that is between you and our Lord. Not all prayer language is the same so it will only be interpreted by the Lord.

In the new testament Paul lays down some ground rules for the supernatural expressions of the presence of God. One of them deals with speaking in tongues, he says that an interpreter must be there to tell the group what is being delivered.

This is all well and good accept, who determines whether the interpreter has it right. It would be one thing if the tongues were spoken in real languages but the marlarky that comes out most of the time is not translatable accept by someone claiming to 'feel' what it means.

I could translate chinese by feeling meaning. I would probably have it completely wrong, but if there weren't any chinese speaking people around who would know any better.

I always thought "speaking in tongues" was a gift where the speaker was enabled to speak in a tongue that the listener understood. For example, an American missionary goes to Japan and learns to speak Japanese fairly fluently within a matter of a few months. This happens in many countries all the time. It happened to me. :-)

No clue Betts...but that is what it says in the Bible...the gift of tongues is useless if no one can interpret what is said. I have never heard anyone interpret...well, never heard anyone speak in tongues either, lol...at least not religious ones. Course, I am not a Pentacostal, but I know several and they have not spoke in tongues either. MY BOX

For the life of me, I can't understand why someone speaks jibberish and needs an interpreter when they speak a language people could understand readily. Sounds pretty "convenient."

Speaking in tongues..aloud..to the congregation is actually prophecy which needs interpretation.
Speaking in tongues, done privately, is a prayer language.
that God understands.
