work on your technique. Relax every muscle not needed to run. Bring your knees higher, extend your legs further. Kind of like when a horse runs. Never go 100% when you practice. Run bleachers. Do the shuttle run. The shuttle run would apply best for softball.

Practicing wind sprints will certainly help in your speed, and certainly weight training will help you gain strength. You may also consider adding some plyometric exercises into your training routine. Plyometrics are deisgned to increase one's explosive force of movement. Some lower body plyometric exercises you might incorporate would include vertical squat jumps, lateral hops (usually performed over a small box or cone, but you might want to start without an object), split squat jumps, bounding drills, and depth jumps.

I have run track for 2 years, and I always do the sprints. What you need to do is pyramids.
This is =you run 1 100 meter dash, then 2 200 m. dashes, then 3 300 meter dashes. Then work your way back down. This worked for my track team.

NEVER run with ankle weights it'll just screw you up in the long run
Do wind sprints
as for lifting weights do stiff legged deadlifts....way better than squats as it hits more of the muscles used
