Luckily most funeral homes hold wakes in the evening. What you can do is attend the wake in the evening (find out about it first) And since he/she was a very close friend I would take 1 day off 2 attend the funerial (burial)
Friends & Family are more important than your job. 1-2 days off is not going to hurt. Im sure your boss will understand.

Wakes are often in the evening and then the funeral the following day. Maybe you can try to go to both depending on your schedule, but I would definitely try to be at the funeral for both closure and support. Also, it is not always the wake and the funeral that the family will need your support.....the days, weeks, and months following will still be very sad for them.

The funeral. Attending the funeral is a sign of respect, however, make sure to tell the family that you had to chose between the wake and the funeral. That way they know you care. I would ask at work and explain and see if you can attend both functions. Most companies/bosses would understand.
I'm sorry about your loss and you have my most sincere prayers for you and her family.

Wakes are usually in the evening -- do you work nights? Funerals are usually during the day.
But -- if you have to choose -- the funeral is more important. But you should go for yourself, so that you can grieve, and to honor your very close friend.
But seriously, I think if this were a very close friend, I would find a way to go to both.

I think it depends on your friend.
Personally, I would want people to go to my wake and have a good time rather than go to my funeral and cry. In fact I personally don't care who attends my funeral. Chuck me in the hole and tap the keg I say. But... this is just me. As close as it sounds like you were I'm sure you'll be able to work out what your friend would want.
My condolences on your loss.

The funeral is the celebration of a life and is the most important to attend.

Contact a person involved with the planning and get details. Explain to them that you can only get enough time off to attend one service and ask if they have any recommendations? There might be something special planned for one service or the other and they could alert you. You would not want to miss a tribute to the person you cared so much about.
I am very sorry for your loss.
