I personally haven't hunted elk but I do know how big they can get so I would get a .300 win mag! My Dad has one and that thing can take almost anything down! And by the way, a .300 win mag would go through the deer so fast that you would think that you missed the deer!

The .308 Winchester with good hunting ammo will take an North American Big game. I would use the lighter, say 150 grain bullets, for deer and the heavier ones (165 to 180 grains) for Elk.

Other stellar deer/elk calibers are the .30-06 Springfield and any of .7mm Magnum family.

Good luck.

I've heard a few good answers for a generalized question, but more important is the type type of terrain you'll be hunting in. If you are hunting in a heavy or moderate brush I would say .30-30 win which is a great shot to 100 to 150 yards or .30-06 which in the same terrain would put you out to 200 to 250 yards, the problem with going any bigger in the .30 cal class or the .270 win or .280 rem or even the .35 wheelin is over penetration, for instance you are in moderate brush and you see a buck or doe at 100 yards, you have a .300 win mag do you take the shot? Most people say I would but the reality is whats or more importantly who may be beyond that deer and brush, I would hate to see a hunter get his deer plus 10 years in prison for accidental manslaughter wouldn't you.
So the rule of thumb is pick the cal depending on the terrain hunted. Now then if you have clear shots from muzzle to 250 to 500 yard like they do in Montana for instance you might want to go with a 7mm mag or the .300 win mag and some of the larger Cal's, the best way to do this is ask a reputable gun shop owner and tell him or her the type of terrain you hunt in and they will help you out or a HONEST hunter, and yes they are a rare find, the sad part of it is that most ppl will say the bigger the better, but that's not always the case, hope this helps you and GOOD HUNTING.

I myself given the choice would choose the 30-06 Caliber because your have many more bullet weights to choose from and it is a better choice of calibers for all around Hunting including African Big Game!!! According to Jack O'Connor the famous Outdoor writer and Hunter!!!

.30/30 can take moose and big bears, with hunting it is placing the shot rather the the power of the firearms hell WDM Bell took hundreds on elephants with a 7X57mm if you are a good shot with the .308 there is no need to change guns

I think a 308 for elk is a little under powered, I would go with a 7mm mag It has enough stopping power ro kill an elk but is not over kill when it come to deer

I think you should use a Remington 500, this gun can take down even the biggest elk and deer.

.308 is fine caliber.
.30-'06, 7mm Mag, .270 are all good choices also.
