Mel colly was found dead in his library.his fore head was resting on the keys of his tape recorder;a pool of blood lay on the desk beside him.from the door,shadow could see that mael's right hand covered the gun and that a bullet had entered his right temple.shadow removed the tape recorder from under mel's head and pressed the play button.a voice said,"this is mel colly speaking.i am not going to go on with a long winded farewell.i'm tired of life and all its anguish.i'll see you on the other side,wherever that maybe."there was a gunshot and the sound of his head hitting the tape rocorder keys,followed by a click indicating the recorder had been shut off.shadow was certain that someone else had imitaded mel's voice and made this recording to sound like a suicide.why does shadow suspect murder???

If the tape recorder heard the sound of mel hitting its keys, then it was still on after his head hit it, Another party must have been present to fake the scene and make it look like he turned the tape recorder off with his head. In addition to the fact that all shadow does is hit play. I doubt a man with a bullet in his head can fall perfectly on rewind, and stop.

His hand was resting on the gun (the gun probably would have fell to the floor, not conveniently resting under his hand). Also, the tape made a sound as if it was shut off. Someone's head could not have the precision to hit only the "off" button. It also sounds like Shadow knows the sound of Mel's voice.
Did i get it right?

Because it says "the sound of his head hitting the tape rocorder keys,followed by a click indicating the recorder had been shut off."...meaning someone else turned off the recorder after he hit the keys!!!!!

Because if Mel had killed himself Shadow would have had to rewind the tape to hear the message. If he just pushed play and heard it someone else was there to rewind the tape :)

cause the tape recorder would have kept recording unless his head hit the stop button , then it would be immediately stopped
