go to your local bike shops and look around... check out KHS, Trek, Specialized, and Giant
expect to pay at least 500 bucks to start for an entry level road bike, more with pedals and shoes (if you want)
you want at least Shimano 105 level components (not Sora)
good luck and wear your helmet!

For a decent beginner road bike, perhaps spend around $700, such as the Trek 1000. The Specialized Sequoia for $770 is pretty nice. Don't go and buy some X-mart bike though. If you want to spend less, you could some heck of some deals on ebay.

I have a suggestion- don't buy it at a cheap-o place like walmart, target, or K-mart.
