Eye,

I have found that 'real world' exercises that takes place outdoors in a street scenario to be a worthy learning experience. After all, if there's going to be a confrontation, it'll likely happen outdoors, away from the safety of the training hall...right?

Variables, such as terrain, weather, foreign objects on the street (broken glass, nails, etc.) and others have a lot to do with the tactics you'll consider using to win the fight and stay alive. What works really well indoors and on a mat does not necessarily make it effective in real world environments.

That would depend on what you are trying to achieve.
Endurance: Distance running.
Recovering your wind quickly: Wind sprints.
Power: Weights, heavy bag.
Speed: Shadow boxing, speed bag, repetitive movement.
Agility: Forms, sparring, double ended bag.
Flexibility: Stretching, which should always be done before and after each of the training exercises I've mentioned.

Bottom line is, be creative with your training. The more interesting you make it, the more likely you will want to keep doing it.

1- watch and UNDERSTAND THE DEMONSTRATION- it helps to have the teacher demonstrate on you, but not every school has small classes to make this practical.

2- 2 man drills practicing the technique working up to full resistance.

3- limited sparring where the focus it to get the technique off against a fully resisting opponent, but there are other techniques you can use and he is just "defending". the focus is on getting things to work in a realistic setting.

4- sparring

5- cross training.

really the "effective" teaching techniqe is how well your teacher explains and shows you the move. #5 is pretty much up to you to do on your own.
