OBEDIENCE TRAINING!!!!!! EXCERSISE!!!!!!!
It's not just a ball thing...it's an "energy" thing.
Obviously you have a energetic dog who needs more excersise. Take it for LOTS of long walks, then...play ball!

A good option is to put the balls away and "train" the dog that ball play is only allowed at certain times.

You can aslo buy a kong toy and an indoor kennel... fill kong toy with peanut butter or treats and put both in kennel when friends come over so that the dog is occupied. Have the kennel in the same room so that the dog does not feel you are neglecting it. This method takes some time and "patience" to train the dog but IT WORKS!!!!

I have the same exact issue with my jack russell. I know someone mentioned exercise and obedience training previously but I don't think that it makes much difference. Mine gets tons of exercise and she goes to training classes every week....she can be playing fetch for two hours at the park and then come home and want to play for a couple more hrs. She also does the same thing as yours as far as barking....you immediately have to throw it otherwise they bark....haha it can drive you crazy!!! When I have company, people usually will play with my dog for awhile. I would probably suggest just taking the balls away with people over and giving him a bone or kong.
