Because there is diversity with a sense of common bond.
Acceptance, tolerance and respect for differences is deep rooted in the Indian traditions. Multiple gods, multiple faiths, multiple scriptures, multiple languages have been the character of India.
Mauritius and USA are some of the few other countries that have almost similar level of "Unity in Diversity".

Other countries are already 'A' Nation. India is the sum total of several nations religions cultures languages aspirations. There are no dalits- untouchables in any other Nation of the World except in India. Constant communal riots are also a feature peculiar to India. Hence it is only India that needs Unity in Diversity if it has to survive as one political entity... not like the artificial administrative Unity imposed and managed by the British. Which withered away as soon as they left.

This is not exactly true, you have more unity and diversity in Europe America Caribbean Country's and Africa, than in India. You need to live in India, to understand this. The cast system in India is a major problem. To have a top job in India or be on TV or Films, you have to be white or bleached white. Bleaching or trying to look or past as European is what makes it, in India This will all come to light the more education that the untouchables in India gets. The level of hatred in India is more than, you have any where on the planet. You will never see a dark Indian in a leading role in Drama Programs or films. Look in any Asian news paper and you will always see, looking for wife Must be fare

I have been to India a couple of years ago, and from what I saw, it was not diverse. This is my perception because where I have been brought up, I have seen more diversity. As someone already mentioned on here above me, the caste system is still strong in India.

And in responce to the post below me. I think you are right, but I see some change. What do you have to say about Bipasha, and have you seen the serial Saath Phere... Saloni Ka Safar?

Well, it is because you are wrong. You see unity and diversity, but have you been to India? I have. The caste system is still alive and well. Though it is illegal as is Apartheid in South Africa. It has been a way of life for them and will not go away any time soon. They look out after themselves first and then others maybe.

What you see on TV is what they or the broadcaster wishes you to see. If one wanted to you could make America or any country look as good.

But, I will say this. They are a rich culture with great food and can be very generous when they wish to be..

India has been taken over by many, many other people...Persians, Muslims, British, etc. The Hindi have, as most religions do, incorporated the important beliefs of other religions into their own at the behest of their people (this is common practice as evident by the Christians adopting many pagan practices to help integrate traditions). - cheese

The strong base of Sanatan Dharma (hinduism) which teaches to respect other faiths... is the main cause of this

However sometimes hindus do react to terroristic activities of minorities... but that is really not a common thing... and will not happen if other communities also learn to live with peace

India has a great culture of living in unified harmony which is bound by a thin thread of inter-dependency and affection. In other countries there is no inter-dependency in the name of private independency.
