There are many Scriptures that help us to see what happens to us when we die. Animals and people experience the same thing when they die as stated at Ecclesiates 3:19,20--"For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again."
Psalm 146:4--"His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish." (No one is tormented forever since they have no thoughts.) The hellfire doctrine is not a Bible teaching.
Eccl 9:5--"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten." (This means that people still living cannot help those who die, they cannot reward them and eventually the memory of those who die are forgotten. They are not forgotten by God though, for he holds all those who die in his memory and soon all will be resurrected back to life. The fact that we do not dwell on those who die is helpful so that death is not something thought about constantly, for if that were to happen, who could stand the pain of losing loved ones? God helps us to cope with our sadness this way. )
Eccl 9:10--"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."(This also helps us to see that the dead fell neither pain nor pleasure)
Death is likened to being asleep. Psalm 13:3--"Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death." John 11:12-14--"Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead."
Soon our "enemy" death will be a thing of the past. It is the last thing that will done away with under Christ Jesus' reign.
1 Corinthians 15:25-26

Well, yes..your physical body will die and return to the ground.
But the body is more then the physical part of it.
You are spirit..you live in a body (some call it an earth suit)
you have a Soul consisting of:
the mind
the will and
the emotions.
Your Spirit and Soul are eternal and will live on..to eternal life
or judgement.
If you have asked Jesus Christ to come into your life and save you, when you die your angels will escort you to heaven and your rewards.
If not, you will begin sinking downward, through darkness into your own private stone tomb. Forever to be seperated from light and goodness.

Eccl 12:7 and 3:20 refers to what we are made of, we were formed of the dust of the earth and to the earth we shall return.
This has to do with our finite existance here on this earth, Our soul has been known since before the foundation of the world.

as for Psalms 146:4
This passage refers to the thoughts of secular men non-Godly ideas and thoughts not from God but from men, those thoughts will perish

The bible says that the dead are no more. When we die, we cease to live, it is like falling asleep. There is no afterlife of Heaven and Hell. That is a myth. When Armageddon occurs, Jesus Christ will call all people out of their tombs and all will be resurrected and judged. Those who are judged negatively, will go back to their resting place for all eternity. Those who are judged positively, will be resurrected to life everlasting on a paradisaical Earth, where sickness, disease, death and unhappiness will be a thing of the past.

There is no soul sleep of the righteous. The bible clearly states that when the righteous are absent from earth they are present with Christ.

2Co 5:8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. (ESV Translation)

Only the damned sleep in their graves.

1Co 15:51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, (ESV Translation)

Those that have died in Christ now reside in heaven. Since Christ, the second person of the Godhead, has always existed, the elect of God have been known to Him before Christ actually walked the earth. So anyone who has died since the world began exists in heaven or in the grave as described above.

The spiritual bodies of the righteous will result from the joining of their heavenly natures with their resurrected bodies at the second coming of Christ at the final judgment.

Those that are damned will awake from their sleep to be judged and join Satan in their separation from God in Hell.

It is your body that returns to the earth as dust, your spirit or soul is what enters heaven, as far as your thoughts I believe it refers to your memory of those you leave behind. heaven is a place of happiness and if you remembered all that you left behind you would feel bad. I also believe that you will again know those you new on earth when they join you in heaven.

The Bible saying that we "return to dust again" means that when we get buried - we are returning to dust by being buried in the ground... but thats our physical body... our soul however will either be sent to Heaven or hell...depending on whether we accept Jesus Christ as our savior or not... and if you do accept Jesus as your savior and believe He is the son of God then your soul will go to heaven.. but if you don't then it will go to hell...

When we die, we are buried, cremated, etc. Thus, our bodies return to ashes, dust and the like. However, our spirit is still alive and either goes to Heaven (if you are a Christian) or Hell (if you are a non-believer).

When we die, we are dead, and the dead know nothing, we are buried to rot or burned to ash, we cease to exist forever, never for that body to return, it is your spiritual life that continues into eternity, and I believe that spirit may choose to return if it so chooses.
