I follow my own moral compass, I don't need the Bible to tell me what's right and what isn't. So why wasn't I cursed and burned up?
Deuteronomy 29:19-20 (NKJV) "and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart’—as though the drunkard could be included with the sober. The LORD would not spare him; for then the anger of the LORD and His jealousy would burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book would settle on him, and the LORD would blot out his name from under heaven."

I don't believe in the Bible; its way too contradictive and so full of hatred. How can a religion claim to be based on love and forgiveness when it focuses so much of its energy on hate, ostracization, and punishment for those who are made out to be evil? There is more evil in wanting to harm people who do not harm than seeking pleasure without harming anyone. I do ,however, believe that there is a god/goddess and that if everyone would do only to others as they would have done to themself ,it would be a more perfect world.

Because God loves you, he sent his son Jesus to die for your sins and "whosoever believe in him shall not die but have eternal life" so some where deep down inside of you, you know the answer to your own question, first and foremost you made a statement that you don't need the bible, but evidently you do, because you go on to quote scripture of Duet. 29:19-20, once that word (God's words, the bible) get inside you it's
in your heart and out of the heart flows " rivers of water" and
there's much good in you therefore you live and strive to do the the right thing. Keep on reading the word so, You are alright.

God is giving you a chance. You can say that perhaps you escaped punishment or damnation, but it won't last long. Also the bible states that "God does not wish anyone to be destroyed, but to attain ever-lasting life.

The bible is a moral and spiritual guide. If you don't want to follow the tenets...fine, however, be sure that you are right in your assessment that you can live the way you want to live. Don't try to get God and start to believe when Armageddon gets here...it will then be too late.

They are talking about Hell. You may prosper on earth, but the scripture is saying that when your life here is over, Without the salvation of jesus, you will not be in heaven, but what is percieved as, Burning and fire, is hell.

Take a look at matthew 11:28-30. Tell me your views on this...

Read your New Testament. Christ ushered in a new order as He is the pascal sacrifice. Also, none of us know the Lord's judgment of us while we are on earth. He doesn't judge us here. Biblically, that comes on Judgment Day, when all men shall rise and be judged before the Lord. It's then that we know his judgment.

Christians will say because of the fact it is old testomony that it does not persist with anymore. the ten commandments are in the advised testomony, too. On suitable of that, there is no longer one verse that announces it does not persist with anymore. The bible is a wolf in sheep's clothing. @No hazard - Is that your way of justifying it? you may get appeared at.

I think its ironic that you choose your "own moral compass", and yet you read the Bible, even though you don't believe you need it. Anyways, you live by The Book, and you will reap a harvest. You live by your own"moral compass", and you will also reap...but instead of the fruit that we all desire in our lives(peace, healing, prosperity in all areas), you will harvest weeds(strife, sickness, poverty in all areas)...and for the fire thing...keep up on the path your on, and see what happens. God still loves you and desires a right relationship with you, and He will be there with expecting arms when you are ready to let Him take care of you.

Your ignorance has been brought to light. You said you don't read the Bible, so who are you to mock it? I bet your some young person who probably plays x-box most of his time. And it's amazing how abtuse the younger generation is now. But hey, if that's what you want out of life, kudos to you.

For starters, how many people in the Bible did God personally cursed and, in your own words, burn?

You are starting with a presupposition that God burns and curses people out of vengeance. That God has a very human character that, like us, seek to punish others to gratify one's pride. It shows that you may not have had a deep study of the Scriptures.

Take note that when God punishes someone, it is always in the presence of a community.

1. Sending of fire to kill the sons of Aaron who defiled the Tabernacle.
2. Sending of fire from sky to kill off those who rebelled and harboured hostility towards Moses.
3. Opening up of the earth to swallow the families of those who cast lots against Moses.
4. Sodom and Gomorrah had burning sulphur rained upon them
5. Saul was condemned by God to die of his afflictions because he experienced God's grace and yet trusted not in Him.
6.King Nebuchadnezzar's affliction of clinical boanthropy (a condition where one would think he or she is a cow or some other domestic animal)

Of course, there are more examples in the Bible and hence, this list is not to be taken exhaustively. In each of these examples where God personally rained his wrath on mankind, he did it out of punishment and also to cleanse humanity (either 1.to show make the one who sinned an example to the rest of the community, or 2.to let the one who sinned suffer so that he may learn God's grace. It is imperative to note 1. rarely happens before 2.)

God punishes, as I have established above, out of love for mankind and not in delight of his subjects squirming in pain from His curses. A curse may not be something dramatic. It may be something subtle, like obstinacy and the unwillingness to do good, thus suffering.

In Deuteronomy 29:19-20, I believe it refers to a man who stubbornly refuses to listen to Truth but persists in his ways, even though it may not seem harmful to himself. The main problem is NOT about the man who does not understand the need for God's Truth and therefore not subscribing to it. It is about a man who has heard and decides to place his faith on himself and not on Him. This is rebellion, not mere ignorance. Jesus Himself acknowledged that people cannot believe until they have heard, so God judge those who have not heard differently.

You are assuming that God is doing all these for Himself and not for us. You have also not given any benefit of the doubt to his claims that he is righteous and fair. Lastly, you have limited God by setting parameters of how he is to show his disapproval of your actions.

In other words, think about it, how much do you understand God and why, in the first place, would u want to reject his teachings without having had a fundamental knowledge in it in the first place? You have not tasted and yet, you have already rejected. As a friend, I advise you to think about this carefully. Why such rejection? Is it out of arrogance or ignorance?

I was once a stubborn anti-Christian because I was unwilling to yield to the truth, that I am fundamentally sinful. I investigated Christianity and found it reliable. More reliable than anything I have ever known.

The Lord has His purpose for not burning and cursing you. Take into account the literary styles of Moses at that time. It probably means God will not approve and will punish those who reject His word.

And having a stubborn and ignorant heart that rejects Truth forever, without even having investigated Truth or the reason why one feels that faith placed on his own flesh is well placed, isn't that more sorrowful than being literally burned up?

Meditate upon it and ask God to reveal Himself to you, my friend. For all who seek Him, shall see His glory :)
