The serpent in the garden was Lucifer, or Satan.

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?"

We know this from Revelations.

3:1-6 The serpent that appeared to Eve is later revealed to be none other than Satan himself (see Rev_12:9). Those who seek to "demythologize" the Bible believe that this account of the fall is allegorical and not literal. They cite the talking serpent as proof.

Can the story of the serpent's deceiving Eve be accepted as factual?

The Apostle Paul thought so (2Co_11:3). So did the Apostle John (Rev_12:9; Rev_20:2). Nor is this the only instance of a talking animal in Scripture. God gave a voice to Balaam's donkey to restrain the madness of the prophet (Num. 22), and the Apostle Peter accepted this as literal (2Pe_2:16).

These three apostles were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write as they did. Thus to reject the account of the fall as literal is to reject the inspiration of Holy Scripture. There are allegories in the Bible, but this is not one of them.

Notice the steps that plunged the human race into sin. First Satan insinuated doubt about the Word of God: "Has God indeed said?" He misrepresented God as forbidding Adam and Eve to eat of every tree. Next, Eve said that they were not to eat or "touch the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden." But God had said nothing about touching the tree. Then Satan flatly contradicted God about the inevitability of judgment on those who disobeyed, just as his followers still deny the facts of hell and eternal punishment. Satan misrepresented God as seeking to withhold from Adam and Eve something that would have been beneficial to them.

Eve yielded to the threefold temptation: the lust of the flesh (good for food), the lust of the eyes (pleasant to the eyes), and the pride of life (a tree desirable to make one wise). In doing so, she acted independently of Adam, her head.

She should have consulted him instead of usurping his authority. In the words "she took of its fruit and ate" lie the explanation of all the sickness, sorrow, suffering, fear, guilt, and death that have plagued the human race ever since that time. Someone has said, "The wreckage of earth and a million billion graves attest that God is true and Satan is the liar." Eve was deceived (1Ti_2:14), but Adam acted willfully and in deliberate rebellion against God.

Secular humanism perpetuates Satan's lie, "You will be like God."

It is a supposition.
It said snake or serpent.
Revelation uses the word serpent to describe Satan.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Therefor they believe the serpent to be the Satan in the garden.
Satan is a term used as a tempter.
An accuser. A liar. In the garden all three were used.
He tempted.
He accused God of trying to hold something good back from them.
He lied, saying that they should become like God.

You may be getting your characters of the bible confused. The serpent is Satan, Satan is the serpent. Satan is called the original serpent that is mis-leading the entire inhabited earth. There isn't a decision to be made on who the serpent is, it has been well known who it is. Read Revelation 12:9:

"So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him."

The serpent was an embodyment of the devil. Miss that part? Go get a bible. Even if you are a non-believer that way you don't sound like a fool when you question someone's faith. If you are an atheist "Know thy Enemy."

Cause we know you. You are more than likely ignorant to the basics of religion and are probably oblivious to half the things that happen around you on a daily basis. All your short comings leave you bitter, depressed, angry, and unfulfilled. Que no?

When many people shout something long enough, somebody will believe it's true. That's Christianity.

Nowhere in their holy book does it say that satan was the serpent. But they shouted it long enough, so it's true.

I think it's cute!

I think it was 'decided' before there were Christians.... *looking* yup, that was old testament.... God's followers were not called Christians back then...

the serpent (which is one of the names of satan) was representative of the temptations that we could/do face

i do no longer understand one Christian who "blames the Jews" for Jesus death on the bypass. The Christians i understand are okay study and understand the Bible. Jesus stated that no person took His existence from Him, that He laid if down of His very own accord. particular of the non secular leaders of the day needed Jesus ineffective using fact they envied His attractiveness with the people. inspite of the incontrovertible fact that, lots of Jesus' followers have been Jewish, hence the Jews, as a team, have been to no longer blame for His dying. with out Jesus' sacrifice on the bypass, we would nonetheless all be ineffective in our sins.
