Ummm, yes. But you have 2 types of transportation by train. The normal days... and the CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!!
I'll start with the normal train travel. Its ok, except that most destinations are far, far away. I went to Yangshou fron Shanghai and it was a 30 hour trip. I was with my gf so it was ok, compared to a few years ago Chinese are more concient of international manners and have progressivle stopped spitting and all the other disturbing things they are found of. Nevertheless there are still some nasty little guys here and there that need education, but who are we to judge. Their country.
Now train during the Chinese new year... that is a treat! Most people rush in and tak the toilet seats and lock themselves up for the whole trip (seated). Other passangers knowing this wear diapers for the whole trip. So imagine you are trying to do the contest of the most people in a train, you are stuck against each other with some who have little to no hygiene and rubbing diapers. EWWWWWW!!!
There is a third option: the trans Siberian. Now that is something to look forward to. A weeklong trip across China, russia and to amsterdam. Leave China and head back to europe adventure style! You have a special ticket where you can get off when you want and take the next train. Quite practical.

It's my favourite mode of transportation, cheap, comfortable, and relatively fast. And if you take a night train, you save on hotels. Soft seats are good for journeys under 8 hours, but for long trips, hard sleepers are perfect and not that expensive, and soft sleepers are really nice. I traveled several times from HK to Shanghai, Beijing, Harbin, Nanning, Xi'an, Guilin, Chengdu, Inner Mongolia, down to Vietnam, etc. If you have specific questions about train travel, email me.

If you are south east Asian passport holder you don't need Visa for entering Hong Kong but you still need Visa to enter China. Please check with your travel agent regarding your Visa.
