At 6 weeks, he's not nearly old enough to hold his urine for more than about 2 hours. He won't be ready for more formal potty training for at least another month. Figure on 10-12 weeks before he knows the feeling and can be expected to hold it for 4-6 hours.

Should you take your puppy outside after 11pm. The answer is absolutely yes! Your goal should be to start the right habits and limit accidents inside your home.

This means you need to confine your puppy when you don't
have your eyes on him. Puppies can squat and start to go in less than 5 seconds so when he's running loose, don't take your eyes off of him for more than 5 seconds.

Now when accidents happen, (and they always do) make certain you clean it up completely. This is done by dabbing up the liquid then using an enzyme based cleaning solution to get rid of any residual odor. Your local pet store has these cleaning solutions and they really work. Using it keeps your house clean and makes it easier to completely house train your pup as time goes on. Leaving the odors can send mixed signals to your pet and that's not good.

Oh, and if he poops in the house, this spot also needs treated with the enzyme cleaner.

The best way to get through the night it like you're doing.

Limit water and food after a certain time.
Take him out right after the evening meal and drink.
Play with him and wear him out.
Try again outside before putting him in his crate for the night.
Just before you go to bed, take him out one more time.
Have the crate next to your bed so you can hear him if he makes a racket during the night.

By using this approach, at 10-12 weeks, you should be set up to take him out when you go to bed and be able to sleep through the night.

Good luck!

Yes, take him outside. He won't make it through the night at this age.

Six weeks is too young to be separated from his mother, despite the fact that many breeders still give them away at that age. It's best to wait until they're 8 to 12 weeks old. I find that pups who are close to 12 weeks do better and if they were socialized in their mom's family they tend to have fewer social problems.
