A cheap, dependable, and inexpensive one to repair. Look around for something that there are alot of. Common cars are usually cheaper and easier to fix. Also, stick to the small engines, and avoid 4-wheel drive, and the extra letters (SS, GT, X, R, etc.).

College Student?
I'd say Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla,
Toyota Yaris,....These cars are for college students who are havin' hard time w/ the gas money. If that's not the case,
hell....all the good and cute looking cars.
New Beetle, Jetta, Audi A4, BMW, Mercedes C class, Honda Accord, CR-V, Acura RDX, or even TL.
Damn...too many cars.
But as always...if you are one of the broke college student...
10 year old civic or corolla is the way to go.
